If the death occurred at home, you must contact your doctor to complete a medical certificate and the ISTAT form we provide. In the case of cremation, a medical certificate for cremation will be required. Doctors often do not have these forms; they are usually provided by the funeral home. After agreeing on the type of funeral with you, we will provide all the necessary documents and handle the administrative procedures. You can also request that the home arrange for the dressing of the deceased, even if the death occurred in a hospital.

Follow the “disinterested” advice of overly enterprising nurses, caregivers, or doormen. Trust the first funeral home that contacts you after a death. Sign documents without considering what’s written, much less “blank.” Request or solicit favors from public officials, through bribes or other means. Go against the deceased family member’s expressed wishes if their choices do not align with those of the family.

The funeral can generally be held, subject to availability of the place of worship and cemetery facilities, 24 hours after the death. In the event of judicial involvement (violent death, accident), it is necessary to await court authorization.

Funeral expenses incurred upon the death of a family member (spouse, children, parents, brothers, sisters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, parents-in-law, dependents, and affiliates) are tax deductible. The maximum amount eligible for the deduction is €1,549.37 for each death, even if the expense is spread over multiple years. Within the aforementioned limit, the expense can be deducted in installments by multiple individuals. To this end, the accounting document must show the breakdown of the expense, signed by the document holder.

The summary death certificate extract is a document issued by the municipal registry office containing the deceased’s personal details and the date of death. This document is normally requested by the notary for any inheritance proceedings and by the banks where the deceased held a current or securities account. Our office provides its clients with at least five summary death certificate extracts.

If the deceased held energy utility contracts (electricity, telephone, gas, etc.), we recommend transferring or terminating the contract by calling the customer service department of the utility company. Regarding insurance policies, legally, they cease upon the death of the policyholder. If you are interested in maintaining active policies (car, motorcycle, property, etc.), it is advisable to contact your insurance company to discuss how to proceed with the change of policyholder.
